Its the time of the year when you start to make 'resolutions' and work out the plan ahead. So it was straight to the boxes to unpack a new lot of beautiful fabrics to kick of 2012 with.
Some of these are available for sale in my new online store and you can purchase as yardage or as Vintage Fat Quarters - 'VFQ'
VFQ - a metric one is 45cm x 50cm. An Imperial one is 45cm x 45cm or quarter of a yard of 36" wide fabric. As these are vintage fabrics the width is approx 35" to 36" or 88 to 90cm. So you are getting a quarter of that. If you order more it will come as one uncut piece - so 2 will be half a mt, 4 will be one mt. Hope that all makes sense. Enjoy.

Tangled Up in Blue in Seddon is now open, Alison is still moving stock in and hanging art works but she is open for business now. Here is some of my things in the shop, how exciting is it for me to have my textiles sitting alongside those by David Bromley and works by Brett Whitely and David Larwill to name just a few.
Tangled Up in Blue is a gallery showcase of Australian artists and crafts people all hand selected by Allison and curated in an eclectic mix with vintage furniture, industrial salvage and one off pieces. Alison will also be offering Life Drawing Classes and other events in the Studio of the store.

Sneak Peak of Some New Product

Here are some of the samples of new product. Made from 1920s to 1940s fabrics and hand quilted. Backed with antique ticking from the USA and France or 1940s muslin and buttoned with antique mother of pearl buttons or piped in signature red and white stripes.

My other range is 'For the boys', military, naval and hunting novelty fabrics from the 1950s and 1960s, piped in jumbo signature red and white and backed with assorted vintage tickings and checks. Hand Packed Feather inserts. Limited numbers available.

I only do a maximum of 12 of any design if the fabric permits. Some are one offs.

Vintage Rayon and Acetate

I was asked the other day about Rayons and Acetates. I'm a lover of Acetate fabric, I love its crunchy swishy sound and its ability to take bright colors. However in the discussion it ended up becoming a bit of a technical hiccup on weather or not these fabrics are natural, man made or synthetic.

To answer this in a bit more detail and to get a tad round about, they are in a way both…

Although they are manufactured fibers, they are not considered synthetic. They are referred to generically as “regenerated cellulosic fibers” or "second generation cellulosics" due to the way they are manufactured. They are derived from wood pulp then chemically treated to create a fibre. But on the flip side they are not strictly natural fibers either as they are not produced directly or entirely from plants or animals. But when you break it down their properties are more closely aligned to natural cellulosic fibers, such as cotton and linen than petroleum-based synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester.

The technology behind these fabrics was developed in the mid to late 1800’s for other applications such as photography and early resins but was not applied as commercially viable fibers until the early 1900’s.

Rayon

Courtaulds Fibers produced the first commercial viscose rayon or artificial silk in 1905 and in the USA it was produced in 1910. However globally the fabric did not adopt the name ‘rayon’ until 1924. Rayon gets its name from the hybrid of ‘sun rays’ due to its ability to handle bright color and have sheen and cotton due to its similar chemical structure. Sun ‘ray’ + cott ‘on’ made ‘Rayon’.

Now days more commonly referred to as ‘viscose’ as this is the main way of producing the fabric. But there are many methods for producing a rayon fiber and there are many sub classes such as Lyocell and companies producing fibers today. Modal and Tencel are modern brand names. But it’s all Rayon.

Vintage Rayon brands are Avicolor, Avril, Bemberg, Coloray, Cupioni, Englo, Enkrome and Zantrel.

Vintage rayon is highly collectable from day dresses and evening wear to Hawaiian shirts manufactured from the 40s and 50s.

1940's Rayon

Acetate

The first commercially produced Acetate yarn was in the UK in 1912. Originally produced for crochet, sewing threads and trims due to its bright luster and dyeing properties. Acetate as a Fabric was produced after WW1 in Europe and was first made in the USA in 1924.

Some of you may have fabrics in your collection that are ‘Celanese’, this is one of the first branded ‘Acetate’ fabrics from the Celanese Company. Celanese was very popular in the 20’s and 30’s for making underwear and slips and often was printed with small florals or was quite pale in color.

Vintage acetate is also found very commonly as scarves and in garment linings and as taffetas, satins and brocades.

Other brand names are Acele, Avicolor, Aviso, Celaperm, Celara, Chromspun and Estron.

It gets even more confusing with some fabrics and processes being called ‘acetate rayons’ and with both the fibers being blended into cottons and silks…you can go about in circles, but the two fabrics are very closely related.

Caring for your vintage Rayon and Acetate

Rayon and Acetate are both wonderful fabrics but do have some pros and cons.

They are both prone to creasing and will weaken and fade if exposed to light and both are not the strongest fabrics and this will worsen when wet so take care when laundering. Try to avoid soaking.

Always pre-wash rayon as it’s prone to shrinking

Gentle hand wash as you would a woolie – gently squish the suds through in a bath of luke warm water. Rinse well and do not wring or twist. If you have a front loader the gentle spin cycle for woolens might be an option to remove excess water.

Line dry away from direct sunlight.

Iron Acetate while damp and do not use a hot iron as it will melt, Acetate can also ‘bruise’ so be careful if you are ironing a garment, be mindful of your seams. Also be careful with Rayon as it can develop heat shine, so a pressing cloth is helpful.

Also, watch for dye run off, many old acetates that are printed such as scarves have a tendency to bleed. If you are at all concerned, a trip to the dry cleaner could be the best option.

Make sure you store your garments clean. If storing fabric for a long period, it’s a good idea to refold every few months to avoid getting permanent creases.

Well, i'm off to the Royal Melbourne Show for Monday and Tuesday with the Yarraville Market.

English Invasion

I have a new load of vintage Liberty and Laura Ashley fabrics. From the early 1970's to early 1980's.

Liberty Tana Lawns, Wintellas - cotton/wool and some furnishing weight cottons. Also a few prints by some other English houses.

Also, as seen in all the interiors magazines the Union Jack is making a come back. Have we all gone a bit Blighty? I have vintage Union Jacks by the metre, each metre will give you 12 flags or will sell by the panel, 3 flags per panel. This flag fabric was printed in the 1980's and was used to make fabric flags. Each flag is 30cm by 47cm. It's a good medium weight cotton perfect for cushions or bags. Or use it as yardage for a full effect.

A Well Earned Rest

I'm taking a break for 2 months over winter.
So my last 2 markets are The North Melbourne Market this Sunday and then the Hand Knitters Guild on the Following Saturday the 28th. So if you need goodies these will be your last 2 opportunities to stock up until August.
So, there will be no markets until August 21st At the North Melbourne Market.

Laundry Lady

Well my hands are red and sore, but I am mastering the art of laundering antique and vintage quilts. The special recipe from one of my ladies in the USA is being used. There is a trick to it as the fabrics are old, some not colourfast and the old battings were usually unbleached cottons. You often have rust spots, age spots and just general old stains from use. Lots of hurdles to be worked out before they can be done. But they come up a treat...and so are my muscles! A fully sodden quilt weighs a ton!
With so many arriving I have to stay on top of them all. I know that in some cases you shouldn't launder, but as I sell these I try to give them a gentle freshen up. Some, I know you just can't and the best you can do it line air them.
So now the slipped seams will be re-stitched, popped patches and shattered squares will be carefully replaced and a few other little repairs will be done. I do not like to change the character of the quilts, I like the ageing and the irregularities of them so I tend to only do what they need.
I let the new owner decide what they would like to do.
And its a great chance to get up close and have a good look at all the amazing patterns in them. I can look at them for hours and still find prints I didn't see before.

I am loving these quilts, they are so lovely, unique, pretty, useful, delightful and just plain wonderful.
Nice and warm and thick and some over 100 years old. Its a tribute to the ladies who made them and to good old fashioned quality. Fabrics are just not the same these days.
I am unpacking more over the next few days, I still get surprised when I open them up and roll out.

I'm so in love with these fabrics these days, the prints are so wild and out there but at the same time so geometric and tribal. Can't put my finger on it, but I do just truly love them. So I have pulled some out of the stash and will bring them to the market days. Some are cotton sateens and others are just lovely crispy cottons. It's a little like Batik but the prints larger scale

It is with much excitement that I share with you some of my new shipment of vintage and antique quilts from the USA.

They are so lovely and beautiful. There is something so wonderful about the fabrics and the hand stitching. I cannot start to describe just how wonderful they are. Original feed sack quilts, some still with their labels on. Ones with the newspaper backings still intact from the 1940's, ones with Civil war era fabrics. The history and the time and love taken to make these, ones with snippets of clothes and what ever fabrics could be found during lean times. These are all in wonderful condition, many unused.
I also have many 100's of hand stitched blocks in various patterns if you wish to piece together your own quilt and plenty of fabrics you can use as well. I will photograph the fabrics later.
Trust me, I am keeping many quilts for myself, these ones are available for you to purchase at my next few markets.
I will also have credit card facilities from now on.

California.....Fabric Bonanza

Hey there, For the last few weeks i've been in Los Angeles and the surrounds....and me being me, I can't say no to a piece of fabric if it comes my way....and a little bit of fossicking.

Anyway, here are some photos of some fabrics I will be bringing back in my luggage.....perhaps an excess baggage fee, but who cares!

I will have these at my next markets - check the dates - first in best dressed this stuff really is the BOMB!!!!
1930's cottons, Depression era, feedsacks, 1940s' 50s' and 60's, border prints....so nice and long lengths enough for dresses! A funky apron, SO NICE!!!! I cannot describe to you just how wonderful this stuff is.

I was contacted recently by a young girl called Sjaan. She is 16 and has organised this market day to help raise funds to go on a mission trip to the Philippines. She is busy making things and has contacted many local arts, crafts and vintage stall holders and assembled them all together for the 30th of October in Geelong West.

Please come down and show your support for this rather remarkable young girl. I admire her get up and go and her creative thinking in putting this market together. Beats a sausage sizzle! But I do still like my pig in a blanket when I go to the evil Bunwas. (Bunnings....blah).

It was a nice surprise today to see that I had been featured on the fantastic fabric site True Up. This is a site by the fantastic Kmel of flickr. I have been an avid fan of Kym's for a few years now. She looks after the vintage fabric pool and is a great walking reference of fabric.

From the Collection - HEAL's TABARD

Like many people who are into collecting, there is the special collection. This is the stuff I hang onto or what I call 'The Retirement Fund'. I have a large collection of mid century textiles, I just love them.
This one is a Heals London by Dinah Marsh. Late 60's. It's in excellent condition but it did have stitched selvedges. I do unpick stitching on my fabrics and press before storing them.
I store my fabrics in acid free tissue and soft fold them to prevent permanent creases. This is really important if you are storing acetates, silks and brocades. You can create nasty hard to remove creases if you don't store properly. I also store all my fabrics in a linen press or hall cupboard. My house is a 60's one so it has the good hall linen presses. (the rule now is if it doesn't fit in the hall press, it has to go) and I take them out and refold every 6 months or so, again, this is to prevent permanent creases and age spots. It's a good idea to air textiles every now and again. Plastic boxes are ok for short term storage, but fabrics need to breathe.

Barkcloth

I have a bit of a thing for barkcloth. The prints are wonderful and there is something about that era that I love in home textiles.
As I have been purging my stash of late, yes, I am a crazy fabric lady, I have been coming across some pieces I have forgotten about.

This is a Heals London from the late 1950's. I have about 6mts of this one, Its a double faced print barkcloth....its printed both sides in a mirrored version so the fabric has 2 right sides.

The top and bottom ones are Heals from the 50's as well. The blue one is a Waverly from the USA.

It's funny unpacking all this stuff. I forget I have them, but some have made it to my couch over the years.

Gearing Up for the Next Market

Well it's the process starting again....getting ready for the next run of markets.
Unpacking and folding, pressing, sorting and pricing piles of fabric for you guys to do wonderful and interesting stuff with. And speaking of the wonderful stuff that you do with these fabrics....if you have done things, please send me a photo. I'd love to see these fabrics come to life.
I have had some of these fabrics in my possession since I was 13 years old...(do the math, thats a LONG time ago) I remember buying my first piece...from Clegs when it was still in Geelong. It was a very elaborate burgundy paisley cotton. Long gone now. I made a terrible 1980's style dress out of it. My sewing skills were not so good back then! And my tastes have changed since then too!

And thanks for your emails as well. So, yes, I will now cut by the half metre on most of the fabrics. If they are below 1.5mts they will still be sold by the length.

Well I have unpacked these beauties to share with you all....some are very drool worthy. Sorry about the bad photos I will take some better ones later. Enjoy!

These are from the 1940's to 1972...and I know it's 1972 as some still have their original purchase receipts with them. They are all cottons. Some are textured cottons and barkcloths. There are lots more and I will post photos as I unpack.
